Stanaway to debut in Super2 at SMP

Richie Stanaway will make his first solo Supercars start in the Dunlop Super2 Series at Sydney Motorsport Park later this month.

The New Zealander will drive one of Prodrive’s Ford Falcon’s at the Sydney event which will be held from the 18-20 August.

This opportunity will serve as valuable seat time as Stanaway prepares for the Pirtek Enduro Cup in which he will drive alongside Cameron Waters in the Monster Energy sponsored Falcon.

This announcement comes one week after the 25-year old said that he was turning his back on a highly successful sportscar career to focus on Supercars.

Stanaway has endured a fruitful couple of years in Europe having won races in GP3, Formula 2 as well as in the FIA World Endurance Championship with Aston Martin.

“It is going to be a great opportunity for me to get some racing mileage without the pressure of sharing the car with another driver in the main series,” said Stanaway.

“Racing in Sydney means I will come into this year’s enduro campaign a lot better prepared than I was last year, so I am grateful for the opportunity and quite keen to see how I stack up against all the other young guys.

“I’ve done a decent amount of testing miles now but you can never simulate a racing environment so it is going to be good to get more race miles under my belt.

“It also makes it a bit easier when you know it is only your own race result at stake and don’t need to take into consideration another driver’s race or championship.”

Before the Kiwi hits the track at Sydney Motorsport Park, a test day is planned for Tuesday at Winton.

My thoughts – Slade Perrins:

I think Stanaway is very smart. It takes a lot to turn away from an outstanding career overseas in Europe, and especially one of his calibre, competing in the Formula Two on the same weekend and at the same tracks Formula One. More recently though, he has made his mark in GTE racing in the WEC and at the Le Mans 24 Hours but with all the controversy surrounding that championship, could it be a dying formula?

In my opinion, Stanaway belongs in Supercars, I think he’ll just fit right in. Although it might take him a few races to get used to the Supercar, by Bathurst, all eyes will be on him.
